Synopsis
Manas (2025) follows the story of Marcielle, a 13-year-old girl who lives in a riverside community on Marajó Island, in Pará, with her father, mother, and three brothers. From an early age, she grows up under the influence of her mother's words, who places an aura of inspiration and promise for the future on Claudinha — the eldest daughter who left on the ferries for a different life after “finding a good man.” Fascinated by the idea of escape and transformation, Marcielle nurtures dreams of following the same path.
As she matures, however, the young woman begins to see reality through different eyes. Her idealizations crumble in the face of the harshness of everyday life and the structures of abuse that permeate both her family and the community in which she lives. Amid suffocating traditions, inequality, and naturalized violence, she realizes that her remaining alternatives are limited and almost always unfair.
Directed and written by Mariana Brennand Fortes, with a collaborative screenplay by Carolina Benevides, Camila Agustini, Antônia Pellegrino, Felipe Sholl, and Marcelo Grabowsky, the feature film is a sensitive and brutal portrait of female adolescence amid a cycle of oppression. By deciding to confront the system that imprisons generations of women in her community, Marcielle becomes the reflection of a greater struggle: the search for freedom, identity, and resistance in an environment marked by pain, but also by hope.
