In the harsh winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex sets out on yet another expedition that was supposed to be just another whaling trip to supply the oil industry. But what begins as a routine journey soon turns into one of the most frightening and legendary maritime stories ever recorded.

In the heart of the vast Pacific Ocean, the crew is surprised by an unimaginable enemy: a colossal sperm whale, of enormous size and almost human behavior, which attacks the ship with a ferocity and persistence that defies comprehension. This epic clash marks the beginning of a desperate struggle for survival.

While Captain George Pollard Jr. struggles to maintain discipline and honor the mission, his first mate Owen Chase, a stubborn man with an unbreakable spirit, faces the burden of leadership when nature proves relentless. The crew, lost at sea, is forced to endure hunger, thirst, storms, and the constant fear that the creature may return to hunt them down. In the face of despair, moral boundaries are broken, and each man is forced to confront not only imminent death, but also the essence of humanity itself.

Inspired by real events and based on the book by Nathaniel Philbrick, the work that also influenced Herman Melville in the creation of Moby Dick, Ron Howard's film delivers a grand and harrowing narrative about courage, revenge, and the overwhelming power of nature in the face of human frailty.
